Users Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
