At least 13 people perish and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
